Lyme disease is one of Australia’s hidden epidemics. Most people do not even know that they have Lyme disease until the symptoms have become extremely obvious. Essentially, Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria known as Borrelia. The bacteria, a spirochete, is transmitted when an individual is bitten by a tick. Serious cases of Lyme disease may impact not only the body’s physical systems but organs as well and in some cases may mimic other illnesses and transmit other diseases.
